From train tickets to hotel stays, senior discounts are plentiful, but they're not all created equal. The amount of money and age of eligibility vary widely by provider. At the same time, there are plenty of discounts well worth your time, especially if you're a frequent traveler.
Here, we'll look at the best travel discounts for seniors, including hotels, airlines, car rentals, cruises, train tickets, and national parks. We've only included discounts that are worthwhile and can provide meaningful savings, and for the ones that cost money up front, we've done the break-even math.

Airline Discounts for Senior Citizens
While airline senior discounts are largely a thing of the past, there are still two options worth knowing about. The first comes from AARP rather than an airline. AARP members can book travel packages through the AARP Travel Center. To qualify, the package must include a flight plus a hotel, a rental car, or both, booked in the same transaction. When doing this, members can get a $50 gift card to a merchant of their choice (or a prepaid Visa card). The redemption email arrives within a week of your travel start date, so if you book a trip months out, expect to wait a while for your reward.
The AARP Travel Center is powered by Expedia, so flights from most airlines are available. However, you should compare the cost of booking through the AARP Travel Center to booking your flights and hotels separately.
Anyone 18 or older can join AARP. Membership costs $15 for the first year if you sign up for automatic renewal and $20 a year after that. Keep an eye out for promotions that offer freebies or discounts on your annual membership, such as cash back or extra miles from shopping portals.
This discount isn't overly generous, and it may not always be the best deal when compared to booking directly. That said, it's worth checking the AARP Travel Center before booking a trip to see if the rate is comparable. If it is, the break-even math is easy: one $50 gift card covers the standard $20 membership two and a half times over.
The second option is the Air France Senior Pass, which costs €49 per year and is available to anyone 65 or older. It offers up to 30% off fares (calculated on Air France's Standard fares), one checked bag included with each ticket, free changes, and a €20 refund fee in economy (no fee in business).
There are some important things to know before buying the pass, however. It's only valid on flights departing from Metropolitan France that are operated by Air France or sold under an Air France flight number. Eligible destinations include Metropolitan France (including Corsica), 22 European countries, plus Algeria, Armenia, Georgia, Morocco, Tunisia, and Turkey. That excludes flights to the U.S., but it might be worth it if you live in France or plan to travel extensively around the country. The senior fare also can't be combined with other Air France promotional fares.
Worth it? At up to 30% off, you'd need to spend about €163 on Standard fares to earn back the €49 fee. Air France says the pass typically pays for itself on the first round trip booked at a Standard fare.
Hotel Discounts for Senior Citizens
Hotels offer the widest range of senior discounts, but they vary from chain to chain. You'll get the broadest range of options if you're an AARP member, which includes 10% off at Choice Hotels and 10% or more off the standard rate at Wyndham properties. Since anyone 18 or older can join AARP, you can enjoy these discounts regardless of age. At 10% off, a $20 membership pays for itself once you've spent $200 on rooms, or roughly one night at a $200 hotel.
Meanwhile, Hilton offers a senior rate at participating hotels and resorts. This rate provides up to 6% off the best available rate. You can book up to two rooms under this rate at a time, which can be helpful if you're traveling with family members, though the second room must be for family. You must be 65 or older to book this rate and will be asked for proof of age at check-in. It's valid for leisure stays only. You can book this rate on Hilton's dedicated senior rate page.
Hyatt's Inclusive Collection, its portfolio of all-inclusive resorts, also offers a senior rate for those 62 and older. You must book and travel by December 31, 2027, and the rate takes up to 7% off standard resort-only rates. Use the promo code "SENIOR" at booking to get the discount. It's only valid on resort-only reservations made in the U.S. market directly with Hyatt's Inclusive Collection, not on packages that include airfare. You'll need to show ID at check-in, or the rate may revert to the standard price, and the stay still earns World of Hyatt points.
IHG Hotels & Resorts offers senior rates to IHG One Rewards members who are 62 or older (or who have a valid membership ID from a retired persons' organization). The discount varies by property and date, but you can expect to save the most when you book at least 3 days in advance. Take a look at this discount when you book through IHG's senior rate page. IHG One Rewards is free to join.
Finally, Marriott runs a senior discount. When we checked, those 62 and older could book a discount off standard rates for stays through December 14, 2026, using promo code S9R. Like IHG, the discount varies by property. The bigger catch is availability: Marriott limits the number of rooms offered at this rate, and blackout dates may apply. You can book your discounted stay on Marriott's website. You'll need to show ID at check-in, and the rate can't be combined with other promotions.
Each of these discounts is relatively small, but they can add up to significant savings if you travel frequently. However, you should compare their rates with other discounts you're eligible for, including alumni, veteran, or employer discounts. The chains' own senior rates don't cost anything to use, so there's no break-even math. The only question is whether the senior rate beats the best rate you'd otherwise pay.
Car Rental Discounts for Senior Citizens
For rental cars, AARP membership is the discount to know.
Members get up to 35% off base rates at Avis and Budget when they prepay with the Pay Now option, or up to 30% off when paying at the counter. This discount includes some perks too, like a free upgrade on compact through full-size bookings (subject to availability), an additional driver at no extra cost, and a 3% credit toward future rentals. The discount is applied automatically when you book through AARP's links.
By AARP's own math, a $350 weeklong rental could save you up to $105 at the 30% rate, enough to cover more than five years of membership at the standard $20 rate. Just remember the discount applies to base rates, not taxes and fees, and the biggest savings require prepaying.
Cruise Discounts for Senior Citizens
Cruise discounts for seniors tend to come as perks rather than lower fares. AARP members get up to $200 in onboard credit per stateroom on Holland America Line, depending on the length of the cruise and the stateroom you book. AARP's cruise benefits page also lists up to $100 in onboard credit on select cruises booked through the AARP Travel Center, plus smaller deals with river cruise and tour operators, such as $100 off Grand European Travel river cruises.
If you're already booking one of these cruises, even a modest onboard credit covers a year of AARP membership. But as with any package, compare the AARP offer against the cruise line's public promotions before you book.
Discounted National Parks Passes for Senior Citizens
The National Park Service offers two types of discounted passes for U.S. citizens and permanent residents aged 62 and older. The first is the Senior Annual Pass, which costs $20 per year. Alternatively, seniors can purchase the Senior Lifetime Pass for $80, valid for life. Those who purchase an annual pass can upgrade to a lifetime pass in person at federal distribution sites.
These passes grant access to recreation sites managed by these federal agencies:
- National Park Service
- US Fish & Wildlife Service
- Bureau of Land Management
- Bureau of Reclamation
- US Forest Service
- US Army Corps of Engineers
At sites that charge per vehicle, the pass covers you and everyone in your noncommercial vehicle. Where fees are charged per person, it covers you plus up to three other adults, and kids under 16 always get in free.
Seniors can purchase passes online or in person. Physical passes are available at the USGS Online Store, which adds a $10 document processing fee to online orders ($30 for the annual pass, $90 for the lifetime pass), while digital passes are at Recreation.gov. Digital passes require a quick age check through ID.me, and you can then keep the pass in the Recreation.gov app, your Apple or Google Wallet, or a printed PDF. Physical passes purchased online can take up to three weeks to arrive, so plan accordingly.
These discounts are absolutely worth it if you plan to visit even just one national park this year, especially since popular parks like Yellowstone and Grand Canyon charge $35 per vehicle. With that in mind, the annual pass pays for itself on your first visit, and the lifetime pass on your third.
If you're not sure which to buy, start with the annual pass. You can trade one annual pass plus $60 for a lifetime pass, or exchange four annual passes for a lifetime pass at no extra cost, so starting small won't cost you more in the long run, as long as you buy digitally or in person.
Rail Discounts for Senior Citizens
Amtrak gives seniors aged 65 or older a 10% discount on "most" rail fares, but it does not apply to sleeping accommodations. Cross-border services between the U.S. and Canada offer the same 10% discount to all travelers aged 60 or older. To book the discount, select "Senior" as the traveler type when booking on Amtrak's website. Proof of age is required when you buy your ticket and onboard.
If you're 62 or older and traveling in California, Amtrak's California senior discount takes 15% off the regular adult fare on the Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, and Gold Runner, which runs between Bakersfield and Oakland or Sacramento. It's available year-round in coach or business class, with blackout dates around Thanksgiving, and it also covers most connecting Amtrak buses. Select "Adult" as the traveler type on Amtrak's website and the discount applies automatically. In the Amtrak app, enter code V282.
The California discount is the more generous of the two, but it's only valid on three routes. Meanwhile, a 10% discount is less exciting, but with so few Amtrak discounts out there, it's worth booking if you're eligible. Neither discount costs anything to use, so if you qualify, there's no reason to skip it. Just note that these discounts may not stack with other promotions, so compare your options before you book.
Abroad, there are a variety of rail discounts for seniors. In Canada, VIA Rail is currently offering travelers 65 or older 15% off Economy Plus, Business, and Business Plus fares on all routes, so long as they book at least 30 days in advance and select "Senior (65+)" as the passenger type. It's a limited-time offer: you must book by January 5, 2027, for travel between September 9, 2026, and April 30, 2027, and it doesn't apply to Escape, Economy, or Sleeper Plus fares. These tickets are bookable on VIA Rail's senior web page.
For travel in Europe, Interrail (formerly Eurail) offers 10% off its passes to travelers who are 60 or older on the first day of their trip. The German Rail Pass is excluded, and each senior can bring up to two kids along for free. You'll find it on Interrail's senior discounts page.
In the U.K., travelers aged 60 and older can buy a Senior Railcard for £35 a year (or £80 for three years), which takes one-third off most rail fares across Great Britain, including Advance tickets. It doesn't apply to season tickets or Eurostar, and it isn't valid on weekday morning peak trips that start and end in the London and South East area.
Because you save a third, the £35 card pays for itself once you've spent about £105 on fares, and the Railcard site says it typically pays for itself within three journeys. The three-year card saves £25 compared with buying three one-year cards.
Checklist for Senior Discounts
Before booking travel with one of these discounts, you should look through the specifics of each offer. For example, ensure you fully understand the cancellation policy for each discount and what routes or destinations are included with the discount pass or membership you're considering.
- Check the minimum age. It varies from 60 to 65, depending on the company. AARP membership is open to anyone 18 or older.
- Compare the senior rate to the regular price or other discounts you may be eligible for, including employer, alumni, or veteran discounts. These may be lower than the senior rate.
- Read the fine print for blackout dates, cancellation rules, and limits on days or seats.
- Book the right way. Some discounts need a promo code or a special drop-down menu.
- Confirm the discount is applied to your reservation before you pay.
- Bring a photo ID, since it's often checked at check-in or boarding.
Running through this checklist before you book will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises on the road, like being charged more than you should or applying a discount you're not yet eligible for.
Final Thoughts
Senior travel discounts aren't as plentiful as they once were, and airlines in particular have largely moved on. But hotels, trains, rental cars, cruises, and national parks still offer real savings, and a few minutes of comparison can go a long way.
The biggest discounts tend to be the least obvious ones, like AARP's car rental rates or a lifetime national parks pass. But before you book, check the age requirement, compare the senior rate against your other options, and read the fine print. And remember, a discount only helps if it's actually the lowest price you can get.
